Great advice. All I need is my brain and something to worry about, and I can avoid work for weeks. I don’t think our ancestors were ever lacking in that.

Thanks for weighing in on Resistance - aside from The War of Art would you have any other recommendations for process and distraction management / productivity for creatives that you'd recommend?

Hi James, Thanks for reading and great question. I mentioned a few in the article: the Pomodoro technique - using a timer for focus as one example. You might check out Bob Shea, an illustrator here on SubStack who discusses a system he uses. https://substack.com/@bobshea I think phones are a huge cause for distraction, so if you can brick or app lock for times during the day, it helps. I like to use a bullet journal for a basic running to do list. Mindfulness exercises and meditation help clear your mind and can improve focus as well. Also, weirdly, rest, exercise and diet help too. Good luck!

Thank you for the reality check!!! It’s so easy to get into the mindset of ‘time is worse now than it was back then.’ Worse? I’m not sure that it’s worse but that it’s just the same story, different time.

Thank you for this! I’m sure I’ve heard this many times but never so succinctly and in a way that helped me make sense of my own distraction techniques! I will be pondering this.
